Hampshire surfers get online

Posted in All posts, Events etc., Learning, Silver Surfers

Across Hampshire we’ve got loads of events going on thanks to GREAT work by volunteers in libraries, schools, community centres, colleges and our record office.

There’s been a super team working on our SS2009 campaign over the last 6 months our first goal was to meet around bonfire night!  A lot of our venues have been holding silver surfer events for the last 6 years and they really enjoy helping people to connect – thanks everyone.

Our launch event at Romsey School was a big hit http://www.hants.gov.uk/silversurfers – see news link.  The children were great, devising their own lesson plan and providing one-to-one tuition – the Tea and cakes afterwards were smashing!

We’ve had new emailers, google maniacs, people trying the mouse out with both hands to see which was best at solitaire and lots of fun looking at maps, news, local travel and events!

New for this year, we are launching Computer Skills for life and have a new website http://www.hants.gov.uk/computer-skills with online and downloadable resouces and lots of useful links.

There’s also full colour packs to help engage silver surfers and blend with courses and support drop-in sessions throught the year.

TOP TIPS

  • lots of planning
  • find out what worked well in the past
  • get some great volunteers

We hope to hit over 100 events and have more running next week – must go . . things to do!  ;-)

PS Big thanks to Natalie for posting the events and both Linda & Nat for their great help with our websites

Arthur is too modest to mention that Hampshire is far and away the best local authority for events – nearest contender is London at 33, compared to Hampshire at 100-ish.
Something for the others to live up to?

    2. Gill, thanks for your comment – our success this year is helped by the great work over previous years
We are planning SS2010 already …!

    3. I have taken a look at Hampshire’s new website “Computer Skills for Life” http://www.hants.gov.uk/computer-skills. As a Silver Surfer I find it excellent, with very useful information sheets too. I think I will recommend it for use in our local internet-cafe, as the computers there don’t have speakers, so silent tutorials are best. Well done Arthur – I must see if I can give Hertfordshire a prod (only three events)!

    4. Thanks for your kind feedback Judith.
If you drop me an email to arthur.england@hants.gov.uk and let me know your address, I will be pleased to send you one of our ‘learner packs’. Arthur

    5. There is usually a problem with the websites run by local government in that they filter information sent to them if it appears to conflict with their views or policies. In effect they are not so democratic as they appear. Having said that, perhaps Hampshire are different so may I invite the Silver Surfers of Hampshire to visit my web-site http://www.shelteredhousinguk.com

      thanks
