Gill, DU blog editor here: what follows is yet another inspiring example of how an organisation (a school in this case) has taken forward the opportunity afforded by Silver Surfers’ Day 2009. Hooray for the school and three cheers for the keen tenants of South Northants Homes. Thanks to Karen Roberts, who looks after the ‘extended service’ aspect of what’s known as the Salcey Cluster of schools in Northants, for this inspiring report:
‘After the success of their Silver Surfers’ Day earlier in the year, Roade School Sports College and South Northants Homes (SNH) are continuing to improve IT literacy among retirement tenants by running a series of computer skills workshops.
‘On Wednesday 16 September, student volunteers welcomed 19 retirement tenants to the first of the six-week, hour long workshops at the school. Students work with tenants on a one-to-one basis and support them as they develop their computer skills and confidence.
‘Roade School Sports College and SNH had held a very successful Silver Surfers’ Day on 15 May, which provided a one-day IT skills course for SNH retirement tenants. This was so well received that it prompted the development of these workshops.
‘Maureen Whitlock, Subject Leader of ICT said:
“We are delighted to be hosting these workshops. It is great that the students will get a chance to experience a different side to teaching and learning. It is good to see the school’s resources benefiting the wider community.”
‘Becky Pavey, SNH Community Development Manager said:
“These workshops will be of huge benefit to our retirement tenants and will enable them to make full use of the IT facilities we have installed in SNH retirement schemes. It’s fantastic to see the different generations coming together in such a positive way.”
‘This is a great opportunity for community cohesion; bringing together the older and younger generations. The workshops are part of our Intergeneration Project, the outline idea is for the younger generation to help the older generation develop their IT skills and the older generation to reciprocate and help the younger generation with their reading skills. Hopefully student volunteers will be inspired to work towards one of Northamptonshire Voluntary Youth Action’s accreditation schemes.”
‘Digital Unite, who run Silver Surfers’ Day annually, started the Schools for Silver Surfers’ Day initiative in January 2009, with ERoSH, the sheltered housing charity.’
