The world can be your oyster

I am Mary Watson, a retired primary teacher, or so I thought, but I have actually taken on a new career, teaching the computer to people in their own homes. I’m the DU Tutor for Luton and the surrounding area.
For the last eight years I have been working with people who in most cases have never used a computer before.
I’m currently helping a lady who is disabled by a stroke, but is very determined to get to grips with the computer. As she has the use of only one hand the computer is set up so that it can be used with one good hand, the use of a special track ball mouse which allows her to control the mouse easily.
The most rewarding aspect is in knowing that she is using her computer while I am not there. Receiving her emails and queries is the evidence I need to know that the skills I have taught her are being used to explore the web. It is opening up a whole new world to her.
Email, websites, photos, and family who are not close at hand are now available to her at the press of the on button and a few mouse clicks.
For this student and a number of others I have taught, especially those in rural areas or those with limited mobility or transport availability, the computer and the internet have brought the world into their home, and gives them great opportunities to develop personal learning skills and interests as well as communicate with people outside the home.
I have also developed some new skills. Using the Wii for exercise and games and an MP3 player to store and view photos and music. The world is my oyster too.
