rgs_logoA note from David Over of the Royal Geographical Society.

Hope you don’t mind me getting in touch. I run a series of talks (21st Century Challenges) here at the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) in London, aimed at engaging the public and younger people in important issues that face us as society.

The RGS is a registered charity and therefore this series is not-for-profit series. The next one I am doing is on the digital divide in the UK.

We have got Martha Lane Fox, Government’s Digital Inclusion Champion and co-founder of Lastminute.com, Professor Tanya Byron, psychologist author and broadcaster and Rory Cellan- Jones, BBC Tech correspondent on our panel.

Digital divide in the UK?

Date: 1 December 2009, 7pm (doors from 6pm)

Venue: Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), London SW7 2AR

Tickets: £10 book online at http://www.21stCenturyChallenges.org

Focus of discussion:

The online world is at a tipping point. There are now clear advantages to being online and the internet is no longer considered a luxury. Today the web is increasingly considered an essential tool for modern life.

Education and learning, e-government and engagement with local services, communication and social networking. Many of us realise the benefits of the online world, but why are 10m people in the UK who have never been online?

Full details of the event are on our website http://www.21stCenturyChallenges.org
