NEW WAVE OF SILVER SURFERS IN BOOTLE

A new wave of silver surfers in Bootle are joining the digital revolution with computer courses which are sending them into cyberspace.
Social landlord Riverside organised the training courses in a bid to engage the older generation with new technology as part of its strategy to tackle digital exclusion in the Housing Market Renewal area.
The courses, which are being held at St Leonard’s Community Hall, are run by 3TC, a charity which aims to make IT accessible to communities, with support from the local Residents and Tenants Group.
Riverside’s Community Initiatives Officer, Bob Campbell said: “People with little or no experience of computers may think the internet isn’t for them, but once they learn the skills and develop their self-confidence, the majority of people get hooked and find it really benefits their lives.
“By tackling digital exclusion we are also helping to tackle financial exclusion and social exclusion. People without access to the Internet are not only missing out on online discounts and savings via price comparison sites but also on social networking sites which enable them to keep in touch with friends and family at the click of a button. The courses also used local history as a tool to support community cohesion.”
Tenant Marie Little said: “The first session was really enjoyable, I’m not technically minded but the tutor was great, the atmosphere and other people helped to make it fun too. I’m looking forward to the next session.”
Riverside is also funding free computer taster sessions in partnership with Everybody Online at the Tenants’ Resource Centre in Picton. Each session will have a theme such as how to cut fuel bills online, Christmas shopping online or social networking.
