On Thursday evening (26/11) we scooped the award for ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ at the Real IT Awards ceremony in London.

This was a great evening for the IT team at Hampshire County Council, recognising our commitment to a wide range of initiatives to help people learn how to use IT at work and in the community, in particular our work with silver surfers.

Linda Campbell, Natalie Hickman and Arthur England receive the award from Daisy McAndrew.

Arthur England, Linda Campbell and Natalie Hickman were on hand to receive the ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ award for ‘Improving ICT literacy of staff, citizens and silver surfers’ . . . . we were really pleased to get this recognition for the work we have done so far and to boost our plans for Computer Skills for life and Silver Surfers 2010.

In making the award, the Judges commendation noted that:

“The Hampshire project demonstrates the best qualities in developing a vision and seeing it through to delivery to a large, disparate community. Through using a wide range of different stakeholders and by maximising the use of shared resources, they are improving IT literacy for both the wider community and staff.

The project brought together an internal programme developing IT skills for staff and a Digital Literacy programme based around two IT knowledge bases: Learn.IT and Computer Skills for life, to create a shared learning resource free to the learner. The programme’s objectives were to improve social inclusion, health, wellbeing, education, employability and enable service transformation.

The team have reduced costs by developing e-learning modules and using volunteers. In doing this, they had to engage a wide variety of stakeholders from IT to Community and Library Managers, staff and industry volunteers and the end users themselves. Both Learn.IT and Computer Skills for life are helping to create a true ‘learning culture’ in Hampshire with a network of ’socially aware’ employees and community groups”.

Judges summary . . . “A great example of exploiting IT to enable groups of people to benefit and learn more, no matter what their age.”

We are now working hard on our preparation for Silver Surfer 2010 and are aiming top reach more venues, with more tutors and of course MORE Silver Surfers – if anyone wants to share ideas, please email Arthur at arthur.england@hants.gov.uk.

Finally, a big thanks to all the volunteers, tutors, event organisers, teachers, pupils, library staff and many more who helped us in 2009 and are already registering to join us again in 2010.  Also a plug for the team at Digital Unite, there’s some great tips, ideas and resources here for us to share.

Arthur
