computer-busIn November, 12 residents from “Johnnie” Johnson retirement scheme Woolsington Court in Bedlington, Northumberland, learnt about computers and the internet onboard Northumberland College’s IT bus, which parked up next to their scheme.

There was a sense of anticipation as residents entered the IT bus and sat down to begin their class. For most this was the first time they had been on a computer. Within half an hour they were surfing the net!

Afterwards, residents were proud of their new found skills. One said ‘This is fantastic! It’s the first time I’ve been on the internet. I finally know what it’s all about.’

The IT bus highly sophisticated in design. Pods come out of the sides and the front pops up to create a decent sized classroom. Onboard are chairs, tables and laptops for 12 people. There’s a big screen at the front of the classroom and a satellite dish on top of the bus so everyone can access the internet.

“Johnnie” Johnson Housing is making a big push to combat ‘digital exclusion’. £26,500 has been allocated for 8 sheltered schemes to benefit from a new computer within the scheme and computer training.

Northumberland College made the bus so they could provide local learning and taking skills training directly to the community. The Trust is delighted to work in partnership with Northumberland College and provide computer training locally at schemes. 16 residents have signed up for a course which is beginning in January.
