Silver Surfers' Month

Posted in All posts, Events etc., Silver Surfers

Anne Donnelly, DU Tutor, Northumberland here: I was lucky enough to be involved in four Silver Surfers’ events spread over four weeks – it would have been less but we had technical problems!

It began with a one-to-one session with an experienced surfer in Cramlington and ended with a group of nine people learning about Google Maps and Street View at Blyth Library.

Along the way the learners from one of the Virgin Media PTAP schemes were keen to show off their skills to residents of other local sheltered housing schemes and McCarthy & Stone invited some visitors to improve their online skills.

Hi,

We won the prize draw!

All thanks go to Sally, who with her organizational skills and enthusiasm has made it a day to remember here at Brecon Library in Powys, Wales.

Everyone has gone home with that wonderful feeling of learning something new, and wanting to know more.

My thanks to all the staff, who are fantastic!

Hampshire surfers get online

Posted in All posts, Events etc., Learning, Silver Surfers

Across Hampshire we’ve got loads of events going on thanks to GREAT work by volunteers in libraries, schools, community centres, colleges and our record office.

There’s been a super team working on our SS2009 campaign over the last 6 months our first goal was to meet around bonfire night!  A lot of our venues have been holding silver surfer events for the last 6 years and they really enjoy helping people to connect – thanks everyone.

Our launch event at Romsey School was Read the rest of this entry »

It's here! Nikki Fleming Silver Surfers (SS) day at Ryde Library, Isle of Wight

Posted in All posts, Events etc., Silver Surfers

Eagerly anticipating the arrival of our next group of Silver Surfers (has anybody got suggestions for a good collective noun?)

It’s always a buzz to open up the Internet world to the uninitiated!

Today we’ll be using’my guide’ (http://www.myguide.gov.uk) to demonstrate + practise email – this is an excellent site for beginners; but … we do have problems accessing it sometimes – can anybody out there recommend any other really good, free email providers, specially suitable for beginners? Hello from Woolwich, SE London, on SSD09

Posted in All posts, Events etc., Help & Resources, What We're Up To

Morning! Happy Silver Surfers’ Day – Digital Unite Team (Gill version) here: Hope the day goes well for all of you. The video below (another triumph for Flip Mino in spite of my slightly shaky hand in the paparazzi hubbub!) was edited in Windows Moviemaker (standard on a Windows machine; I’d never used it before so it must be highly intuitive), then uploaded to YouTube after yesterday’s celebration of Silver Surfers’ Day at Greenlawns sheltered housing in Woolwich which is also home to a vibrant UK online centre. Greenlawns invited Minister of State, DWP (special responsibility for ‘Positive Attitudes to Ageing’), Rosie Winterton who had a little lesson from Daniel…watch the results, below. (For other fine silver surfers’ films, including Joan Bakewell, Angela Rippon, Martyn Lewis and Patricia Routledge, see here.)
