I’ve been out of touch with this column and have just popped back. I’m surprised there are not comments on this. I’m particularly surprised that pensioner groups should apparently have reached the conclusion that pensioners wishing to have internet access can do so in places like libraries.

I don’t think that is enough to make progress in digital inclusion of the older age groups. I wonder if the groups making drawing that conclusion were users themselves – probably a mix of both.

I do feel very strongly that immediate availability, and familiarity, are the keys to easy and productive use of the internet.

And if the stories one hears are true, such as those of councils and government bodies proposing to make services available only via the internet, pensioners will certainly need to be at home with their computer and their papers to sort themselves out. But cost is certainly a problem.

tried them all for you. the http://keybr.com/ is the best for quite a few reasons (IMHO). Essential to see keyboard onscreen. not too heavy on flash and loading. uses words not just letters. haven’t seen a better one online. only improvement would be a quick practice on just the homekeys before launch into other words.

Thank you for this post – you might find http://www.carers.org and http://www.youngcarers.org interesting in this regard. They provide very lively discussion boards/forums and live chats for carers to discuss and share their experiences with one another as well as hosted chats with people from various relevant organizations and backgrounds

The youngcarers website also provides an avenue for young carers to submit their blog posts about any thing they want to share.

Well done everybody, that’s a massive advance since last year. I particularly love the idea of young and old coming together in these projects. As an ex Silver Surfer of the Year runner up I shall go on keeping my eye on DU and spreading the word where I can.
